Subject: Bogging down my email!!!

Foxseelady ( ) posted Fri, 22 August 2003 at 11:55 PM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 6:41 AM

Hi, I just got back from a few day trip and found over 100 emails letting me know people posted lol. I like getting the ones I post to so I can keep my eye on them, but wow it seems I got one for every post made when I was gone!! It worked out kind of good because I was gone ;) but now I'll be here daily likely and really would like to know how to stop them all from coming to my email. I checked my profile thingy there, and didn't see anything that would cause this, any advice??? Thanks muchly, Rita

If you go to "My Profile" you will find the option: Receive notification when your favorite artists upload a new gallery image? Yes / No Selecting "No" should switch off the emails :-)

I think Foxseelady was referring to Forum posts, not the galleries.

Many sites have e-mail notifications that only send out one e-mail per thread vs one per post between visits. The easiest method I could think of would be to set a "flag" (ie, 0 [no e-mail sent] or 1 [e-mail sent]). Example:

  • JohnDoe reads "E-mail Notification" thread at 08/23/03 08:00am and sets e-mail notification
  • Joe Blow posts at 08/23/03 08:15am
  • R'osity checks if email_flag = 1 - If email_flag = 1, do not send e-mail;
  • If email_flag = 0, send e-mail;
  • Set email_flag = 1
  • Jane Public posts at 08/23/03 08:16 am
  • R'osity checks if email_flag = 1, etc...

Another option could be that if email_flag = 1, then temporarily disable the e-mail notification for that thread. JohnDoe, upon reading the thread again, would either trigger email_flag = 0 again or could post and re-check the E-mail me... option.

Not only would this save the Member from tons of e-mails, but it should also help R'osity by eliminating a bunch of unecessary e-mails being sent.

Hi, k thing is that I am getting the fist post made in a new thread; each and every new thread! Will that flag setting work for that? Sorry I didn''t quite understand that. I haven't changed anything since I got here and this is a new problem so I'm not even sure how it happened. Hope I'm not being a pain!

CyberStretch ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 3:33 PM

Are you gettig e-mails for threads you never went to? If so, it should not be happening. Or are you getting e-mails every time someone posts to a thread you visited?

It sounds like you have 'Email on post' switched on in the forums you visited. If you look at the top of the forum, you should see something like the attached image. If 'Yes' is in bold, with '[No]' underlined, click on [No] and it should switch off email on post. You'll need to do this individually for each forum. Alternatively, you can click the [*Edit Forum Options*] link and set the checkboxes for all forums in one go. Cheers, Kev.

All of mine say NO and I get emails anyway.

Foxseelady ( ) posted Mon, 25 August 2003 at 12:48 AM

I'm getting them for ones that I have not seen yet. I checked and the "no" button is bold also. Hmmmm this is odd. Maybe I'll click yes then no again to see if the settings reset themselves.

Unfortunately, the E-mail on Post, the Notify checkbox below, and the Forum Preferences - although all seem to allow Members to turn off E-mail Notifications - do not affect each other nor do they disable e-mails; with the exception of the Notify checkbox below, if you uncheck it in every post you make.

I have opted to filter any e-bot messages to the bit bucket just in case I forget to uncheck the box. :0)

Perhaps, kb, you can bring this up to the development/programming team again and see if they can get all of these options coordinated?

I have opted to filter any e-bot messages to the bit bucket just in case I forget to uncheck the box. Now thats a good idea. :) I will do the same, as Im having the same problem Lavender is..everything that applies to not receiving ebots is def. checked 'no' on my end, but I get them anyways...weird.

I'll ask the programmers what's going on, since the entries in [Edit forum options] and Email on post should be co-ordinated. They are for me; if I uncheck this forum in [Edit forum options] it changes email on post to No. Notify is different, and relates to just that thread, but I'll bring it up anyway. Might be a good idea (it's been mentioned before) to have that default to No. Kev.

kbennett ( ) posted Tue, 26 August 2003 at 11:16 AM

Right. Apparently there is a glitch which is causing this to happen for a number of members. We can fix it manually, but what we need is a list of which forums you are getting the erroneous ebots from. You can post them here and I'll forward them, or you can IM the list direct to tutone1234. Kev.

Foxseelady ( ) posted Tue, 26 August 2003 at 6:58 PM

Hi there, I am just getting posts from the poser forum. Glad to know it's just a glitch and not something I did for a change lol. Thanks for all the help.

CyberStretch ( ) posted Tue, 26 August 2003 at 7:57 PM

All of them for me. :0) I have all options set to "No" in Forum Preferences and E-mail on Post, but the Notify checkboxes are always checked. Due to PEBKAC and ID10T errors, I sometimes forget to clear it before posting and I get the e-bot.

kbennett ( ) posted Wed, 27 August 2003 at 10:36 AM

Foxseelady: thanks, I'll pass that along. CyberStretch: you mean you get a notification for every new thread in every forum on the site?

CyberStretch ( ) posted Wed, 27 August 2003 at 5:57 PM

No. Sorry. Just that the Notify checkbox is always checked regardless of the settings for Forum Preferences or E-mail on Post. As I said, I filter them directly into the trash so I have not checked them lately, nor is it a major problem. :0)

kbennett ( ) posted Thu, 28 August 2003 at 2:51 AM

Right, see what you mean. I thought that must've been a helluvan ebotpile, one for every post ;)
