Yes you can .. Sort of. But only for terrains and general things. The terrain comes in with the materials intact. What you have to do is create the terrain and then, under file, click export object. It will only do it with terrains. I found it good to use for trying to make someone sit at a table, etc. That way the height is right and all. But anyway, the materials come with the export no problem. Option two is create a document that is perfectly square, ie. 400x400, put the texture you want on the ground plane and render from the top. Save the image. It creates a good swatch with the material you want without having to export stuff.
