While I have on occasion had ideas from the work of others that look fun to try, generally, I just have happy accidents like that 'fro guy, Ross, says. If I can't think of anything to do, I just fire up the apps and work on technique. If something comes of it, great. The steel dragon I posted over at 3DC last night was something that started out with trying to light up an imported 3d Knotts object and then it led to skylab and I just thought it needed a dragon in there. That's it. Just nothin but goofing around and happy accidents and if I have nothing to show then maybe I've learned a new trick or two along the way.
