Subject: What happened to the Gallery Views counters?

Gorodin ( ) posted Sat, 13 September 2003 at 10:33 PM · edited Wed, 26 February 2025 at 11:18 PM

Is it just me? 1st, all my pics show 0 views, even tho mosy have comments. Now, the counter line is missing entirely. Wassup? Is this on purpose? This was one of my favorite features!

dialyn ( ) posted Sat, 13 September 2003 at 10:41 PM

Not just you. Most likely the counters are just in the shop for repairs.

agiel ( ) posted Sat, 13 September 2003 at 10:43 PM

It looks like everybody's counters are either showing 0 or ???. I hope they haven't been reset by accident :(

Oi, I hope not. :(

Tim says that they will be back up in a while - just a mantainence thingy - gosh this gave me a scare for a moment there ;)

Counters are displayed on full image page for now. I will try to get them back on the thumb display page if it can be done without slowing the site down again. Tim

Giana ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 2:48 AM

for that matter, why not remove the number of comments listing too on the thumbnail pages, as once you open an image you can see all the comments anyway... probably would upset a fair number of folks, i suspect, but anything to get the speed back up for us poor dial-up users would be most appeciated!! :))

Giana ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 2:51 AM

it looks less cluttered without all that text, too, making the thumbnails far more central to the eyes... shrug

Gorodin ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 2:51 AM

of hits and # of comments on th ethumb is like extra advertising. If the numbers are high, more people are likely to look...

Giana ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 3:24 AM

yea, i understand that, but what exactly are we as posters advertising??? shouldn't the art be able to stand on its own without it becoming an advertising/popularity thing?? and please know that i most sincerely do not mean any disrespect, but isn't it supposed to be about the art?? i mean if i go to an art gallery there are not signs telling me how many people stood in front of each painting and what they had to say about each as they looked at them... i mean folks would still be looking, and still be commenting, and doing whatever else it is they do right now, but the 'advertising' aspect would just be diminished... i dunno... maybe it's just me... i mean i'm pretty sure it is... :))

Gorodin ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 3:38 AM

Oh, I get it... You're an idealist. :-)

Giana ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 3:41 AM

hahaha... yea, a very cynical idealist!!! lol... your comment just made my night... i'm giggling like mad... thanks! :)) and actually, i'm just a wishful thinker ;)

BountifulKnight ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 3:47 AM

I wouldn't mind if there were no counter information on the main thumbnail listings, but I do like it when I view my own gallery so I can see at a glance which images are getting viewed and commented and which ones aren't. However, I do feel for modem users and if we can speed up the experience for them, I'm for it. As for the advertising aspect, I liked the info when I was on a modem. I could look at the viewings compared to the comments and the rating to help determine if I really wanted to use my precious transfer time to view that image. Just my humble thoughts for whatever they are worth.

Spit ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 4:03 AM

I agree with BountifulKnight. I really hope they put the # of views back with the thumbnails. I hate it like this. I really do. And the # of views being on the image takes away from the text underneath. Gets in the way of the flow of reading the title, seeing the image, then the words about it. It wasn't broken...why did you 'fix' it? Sigh. The slowdown for me was always in posting a comment and also the request for the image, not getting the thumbnail page.

I want them back as well. This is certainly not an improvement.

For the artist, who's been self taught through this whole thing, and surrounded by people with a clue the counter (at least in my gallery) gave me an idea of how well I did... because I am ever critical of myself as I would imagine most artists to be, and what renders at a glance had something that may have needed improving upon. Without the 'at a glance', I may as well be posting anywhere and guessing at the number of hits... too slowly learning from whatever mistakes I've made to make my hits not so high, and too slow to improve upon them. For me, it's not an ego thing... not wholly, it's a tool. Please put them back.

I have a dialup and have never had any hassles about loading - well not too many hassles of the kind that annoyed the sh*t outa me....

sirkrite ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 8:42 AM

Not for nothing, but a lot of us like to check to see how many views we get on our pics. Now we got to load the main picture just to check. Isn't this going to use more bandwidth Tim?

This has been put back as it was. The change did not dramatically improve gallery performance. Looks like we will need some time to work thru a full approach. We will likely need to involve the community because it will likely involve trade-offs that may affect peoples viewing habits. Tim

XET_Stormy omg yes. I am self taught..no college nothing{well mom is an artist too but she would do things like stick my hand in paint and ask me how the "color" felt and what it made me think of~smiles~} so when I go to see my gallery thumbs and see the hits..I get patheticly happy. and I dont even have thousands of views!~giggles maddly~

Whee! They're back! Thank you, Tim. Cheers, too, to DarkElegance. Nice to see I'm not the only one lost in a sea of seemingly professionals... or, at least, long practiced. :) Stormy

Penguinisto ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 10:06 PM

It's a minor vanity I could do or do without, and really - we already know which pics get the most hits anyway (hint: she's prolly nekkid, in a suggestive pose...) :p /P

DarkElegance ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 10:14 PM

NOT TRUE lol the naked suggestive poses do not nessecarily get the most hits. one of my pics got a hella hits and it was a veiled womans face. ;)

I agree... not true Pengy. Its the popular folks that get most of the hits... (grin, duck, and run!) actually, if you spend time commenting other people, you will find they will quite often comment you back when they see your piccies... (hint, hint)

Penguinisto ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 10:40 AM

LOL - I was kidding (but that not far off the mark :) ) sigh I wish I actually did have time to go about the galleries these days...
