Hey! Just got a new camera:D..Nikon Coolpix 4300...Pretty good too. Ive been checking out the manual settings and I was wondering if you could tell me which shot you prefer....

It doesnt really matter which i like, they are just test shots with different shutter and exposures and i was just wondering if the 1st one looked a bit overexposed or if it was exceptable. But if i had too like 1, id say the second because of the contrast. But i think the crown glowing in the middle of the 1st pic looks neat too:)

I think you have analyzed the situation very well. It always amazes me how some flowers turn out looking unbalanced on film, (or it seems the same with digital). Particularly the blue ones can look really strange. [Morning Glories taken in the bright sun sometimes come out pink!] It is possible a UV filter could have helped here. But, since you had the foresight to take two shots at different exposures, a little cheating in Photoshop may be excused?

If the camera has a flash you'll get better shots in harsh light by letting the flash fill-in the shadows and even out the lighting....or do what Misha does and cheat...nana nana boo boo...cheater, cheater...gonna tell the teacher (LOL)
