You are talking about separate material regions. Steve Cox's UVMapper will let you select various object groups within a model and assign different material regions to them with whatever name you want. The obj must have the parts to be separately colored as named meshes or groups within. UVMapper also supports select individual polys and assigning material regions to those as well.
