I went back and forth with my latest yesterday. Got sunlight off and couldn't get it back on. Finally got it back and the colors were screwey. I tried to save it as a different file and got the message "unexpected error. Out of Memory". The hard drive still has 37GB free and the last save was only 321MB. Fortunately all the new objects are saved seperately as bryce files. I also have three versions of the file I'm working on. I'm sorry that you lost your work. It's good that you got a save in though. When you get a new machine add lots of disk space and save sequential files every day.
