It sort of sounds like your hard disk is about to crash. I would make sure to back-up any important data why there's still a chance. I lost a lot of data once when I ignored the early symptoms coming from my hard drive. I remember one of the first signals I noticed was the drive was making a repeated 'whoosh' sound as the drive head thrashed around trying to read the disk.
