okay here is it, there are different mapped parts that are grouped and colored differently, I did export a different box with different colors on it and it showed up just like it looked when I exported from max in both obj and 3ds formats. I sent the obj and 3ds file to a friend he converted it with deep explorer and this is what it looks like. I think I got it working now, thanks for your help
