Here's a small exploding head rendered in Bryce: http://www.datamike.com/bang.mpg The fragmentation of the head was the tricky part (done with TrueSpace and imported to Bryce using "Susanna"). The explosion is real simple: an expanding volumetric ball with animated material and one quick animated light.
