To Q#1. I assume (and remember?) you're on Mac. There is no way to convert old 3.x stuff to Mac. Simply not. I installed Vue 4 on a windows box as well (in the office), load there the old things and save them there again. That works. Q#3: Try to switch on OpenGL, makes is shaded - if Vue doesn't crash with your graphic card. OR, try to build the canyon with two terrains, on for the left and one for the right side. Then you have much more control and can even switch to wireframe box mode. This helps me sometimes to see more exactly where i am in the scene.
