Subject: New skelly texture

Gareee ( ) posted Wed, 15 October 2003 at 10:37 AM · edited Mon, 29 July 2024 at 1:10 AM

I got Jon's skeleton warrior with texture, and while its good, it is also off to the gemoetry a little. I started tinkering with it a little today.. here's the result. Use it for the texture, and also as a bump map.. maybe 40-50%, and if you want, also add some specular wet look. LMK whatcha think (first texture posted)

Ok, here's the texture... ;)

Gareee, I trust you have permission from Jon to redistribute his texture map?

Gareee ( ) posted Wed, 15 October 2003 at 1:07 PM

well, he is giving it away... it's not something for sale.

Gareee, Just because it's free doesn't mean you can edit it & then give it away without permission. It's Jons' work & only he has the ability to allow derivative works to be distributed.

I know john is a nice and understanding guy, but is it possible that either Gareee or a mod can pull that TEX before this becomes an issue? Obviously there is no malicious intent here, but cooler is right. You should check with John Malis before posting this.

Gareee ( ) posted Wed, 15 October 2003 at 2:04 PM

I pulled it, and emailed John.. I'm awaiting his reply. If nothing else, I'll post just the head, since it's quite differewnt then the original now anyway, and people can cut n paste it in john's original image. Didn't know this was such a big deal on a public domain image. Once you give something away, it does become public domain. (Artist here)

Gareee, Free or for sale is immaterial. The only way something can become public domain is either for the copyright to expire (usually 75 years) or for the original copyright holder to specifically give up all rights. Usually this has to be done in writing. (Copyright Enforcement Agent here :-)

Gareee I have to agree with cooler here. Regardless of how you got the thing, unless the artist specifically said it was public domain you CANNOT legally modify and distribute it. We're very gungho on copyrights and such around here, just as a note. However, Jon is very cool so I don't see there will be any isuues :)

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Wed, 15 October 2003 at 3:18 PM

I think the reason the texfiles didn't show up here is that they were over 200 KB, which is just as well (to avoid copyright violation).

Jon ( ) posted Wed, 15 October 2003 at 4:22 PM

Ok, I just got Gareee's message so sorry for coming in here so late. Since I didn't see the texture I really can't see what you've done Gareee but this is an old character - about three years if I remember correctly so if you have improved on it or modified, of course by all means you can post it. I would just like to ask that you leave my name on it and add i.e. Head Modified by Gareee or something to that effect. Although by giving them free I'm not making them public domain as the others have pointed out I do allow redistribution when there has been individual work put into it, a good example is liteluvr's Tolkien's dwarves which were derivatives of my dwarf but so very different. Also thanks everyone for handling this till I found the thread :) I can always rely on this community spirit!

Ok, here it is! B&W now, and I'd use it as a bump of about .03 as well.

Oh! and I'm only really working on the head.. the rest looks fine, IMHO...

anyone know why that image posted so far to the right?? It's because images are horizontally-centered on the page by default, and your previous image in this thread was 2500 pixels wide. Nice work on the skull. Y'know, until I made those graveyard rags for the skeleton, I never realized that its fingers weren't posable.

Gareee ( ) posted Thu, 16 October 2003 at 6:58 AM

yeah it's kinda weird.. they have like 14 default poses, but they never made his fingers poseable like regular figures.. wonder if that would be a easy fix for someone "in the know"? Would you like me to post the raggedy transmap as well? If you do pants, I'd be happy to rag those up as well.
