Peter sharpe has some good tutorials. You might find a link to his site under the "Bryce related links..." up under the banner. And yes, if I remember correctly his are done with terrains. Good luck. You could also use metaballs, but I think only Ornlu is crazy enough to place all those in such a way that they look right.
