Last time i did something like that - i duplicated the object i wanted to emit light and transferred it to a light source from the edit menu (little arrow on the right when in edit window) then in the materials - changed it to "light" - then clicked on the other object - that i first duplicated, and then gave that a glass finish - or something transparent (or made transparent with the materials editor) and then clicked ok - and it was done!
