The rendering engine has been upgraded a tad, you now have soft shadows, a more enhanced light lab, more robust settings for reflections, depth of field etc. some features will for sure slow down renders, but the end result is usually great!! Metaballs are fun to play with, great results come from those, I would suggest upgrading.
