If you can open it, it is probably in a color mode that you can not use for a lot of things. Change it to a grayscale image (or rgb). If Photoshop cannot open it, search for an exension that is not in place, or let GraphicConverter or another file converter of your choice change it to something PS reads. Photoshop 7 writes and read iff files, so I think it is the color mode.
