Something I'd like to add to daverj's post. A slavish reproduction of a public domain item is also public domain, under US copyright law, Bridgeman vs. Corel. For instance, an art print of a renaissance painting. If you put "Bridgeman vs. Corel" in Google, you'll come up with lots of sites, but here's one that generally has some good copyright advice. They also have a link to the decision itself, if you like legalese. (And I'd just like to say, thank you Bridgeman Art Library, you selfish bastards. Without you, we wouldn't have this legal precendent.)
