Definitely inform them of your doscovery! This means there may be a rudimentary form of life there beyond simple bacteria, in fact there may be an entire subterrean ecology that we know nothing about. If there were significant quanity of sheet micas beneath the surface layer they would act like a window to allow light to penetrate into subterrean caverns formed by volcanic activity. So cool!!!
