one technique used is to create a sphere, and texture it with a star mat, I think I've seen a few (galaxy and galaxy1, I think at Wolfie's Den..I think). Put your scene inside the Sphere, bring in a light to suit (I use radials because they render faster..well, never mind..;), and whatever you want to render. A quick tip- sometimes it helps to delete the basic plane, or you get 'horizons' in space..;) You might also turn off the shadows in lighting, because nothing says 'wrong' like a shadow on a planet..;)
