I've had exactly the same problem recently. I found that as soon as Vue wouldn't import properly (the textures couldn't be found as you said) then Vue wouldn't save the scene without it being corrupt, as far as I can remember the file size of any attempted save was 7kb. I'm with Gebe on the reason, memory. As to the solution ? One thing though, are you following the advice of others here and organising your scene into different layers? I've found that helps. Hope this is of some use, though I fear not :(
