If you compare the result and the effort it takes compared to what you can create if you spend 6 for backissue #64 of Digit Magazine and get Particle Illusion 2 SE on the CD.
Sorry to say Vue is one of the few renderapplications that can't take an animation as a texture. This means that you cant render animated explosions in a Vue animation (unless changing images one by one by hand). In order to do that you would have to use something such Adobe After Effects in order to join your Vue animation with the animated Particle Illusion effect(something that however works greate).
But, still images are no problem.
The way i did this 5min exsample image.
1 Selected an explosion in Particle Illusion
2 Clicked the save button and after naming the file I did fill in the output options in witch I checked alpha.
(If you download the demo or buy it then note that when saving there is a bug in the save dialog as it not shows the .tga extension as an option in the list. If so then just name your file name.tga and the correct dialog will appear anyway.)
3 In vue I created an Alpha Plane and imported the .tga image.
4 Then as it should illuminate itself I opened the material dialog and cranked up illumination.
5 Then I hit render.
