I tried and tried, but never really liked the results you get with the Sketch Renderer (which is what prompted me to start experimenting with Z-tooning and such). They're very useful for creating an abstract painted look, but not for detailed illustration. There's a Z-toon by Eowyn in the gallery here that I think is better than anything I've even done with it. ;) Stewer and Crescent also know a lot about P5 cartoon shaders, and maybe they can help too.
