Subject: Fractals make me fart...

pookah69 ( ) posted Wed, 28 January 2004 at 1:01 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:54 AM

You know, every so often, I try to be open-minded and not filter the galleries to view only Poser images. Recently, however, I've been distressed by the preponderance of fractal images. Can somebody explain why this is so--did some piece of software come out that is to fractals what Poser is to Big-Breasted Women? Anyway, I've noticed an odd phenomenon...whenever I view fractal images, I become extremely gassy. Has anybody else experienced this? Just wondering.

SnowSultan ( ) posted Wed, 28 January 2004 at 1:12 AM

Haha, best subject line I've seen in a long time. :D I only view the Poser images now mainly because of the flood of fractals and Bryce landscapes (Terragen ones actually impress me more). Kai's Power Tools was to fractals like Poser is to nekkid temple babes. Maybe the gas is unrelated though. ;)

Well, there is the "ho hum, yet another one" type fractal. Some people aren't very imaginative with their fractals. ;) On the other hand, some of us make fractals that look like genitals, so there you go. It just depends, like all things, on the creative and technical ability of the person making the fractal. Oh, and I find the KPT fractal generator thingy useful in some situations. When I just want a quickie fractal to use as a fill or a background tile or something, it does the trick nicely. ;-) bonni

Hehe so this must be the ultimate sick-to-your-stomach-picture. Fractals gives you gas and Koshini is know to make some ppl wanna puke ;o) And I make fractals the Anton way: Turn dials till I get something *G* but it's neat, sorta like a kaleidoscope :o)

That is a cool fractal. Pity about the foreground. Excuse me while I run to the bathroom. Feeling sick to my stomach. Pity you couldn't find a way to put a naked Vicky and a temple in the picture too. And it needs a sword. And a Freak in a tutu. And it should be stereoscopic. Maybe I should keep quiet now.

Hehe numanoid, I could sorta hear you were joking. Actually I HOPE you were faking it when you ran to the bathroom coz I didn't hear you flush :oP Btw I'd love to make stereoscopic pictures, and even more so stereograms I know it can be done with Poser. Only I'm one of the 5% (or thereabouts) who just can't SEE those darned stereograms. I have tried it so many times that the word stereogram makes ME wanna puke L (Yes I have tried all the tips and trix in order to see them. No go)

"Only I'm one of the 5% (or thereabouts) who just can't SEE those darned stereograms." I never could, either. I still can't really see the really complex ones. But just a few days ago my husband found one of his old stereogram books and taught me the trick to seeing them and I'll be damned, it worked! Don't worry, though. You're NOT missing that much. After the first few (which make you go, "Wow! Cool!") it gets tiresome. I mean, there's a reason it was short-lived trend. ;) bonni

ernyoka1 OK, I give up. What does it say? hana kai to no (unknown kanji) hana is flower, kai is fire and then what? At least I think that first character is hana. It's been so long I could be wrong.

I see this thread got moved already...and to a Fractals forum!? LOL, I really thought we already had a forum for everything already but I didn't expect this. :) You're right ernyoka, the first two characters (if I remember correctly too) say "hana bi" = "fireworks". It kinda looks like it's saying something about the fireworks (maybe like "beauty of fireworks" or something?) but I spend much more time trying to get Japanese to improve their English than to improve my own Japanese. ;) SnowS

Could it be Fireworks at night or something? I vaguely remember something like that, and the title of the pic is Night with Fireworks, so it is likely something along those lines :o)

Thanks. I guess "bi" is an alternate pronounciation for "kai" (Many Japanese Kanji have multiple pronounciations that bear little resemblance to each other.) Oops. Better say no more or this will get moved to the Kanji Forum. I mean the Writers Forum. I mean the Japanese Forum. I mean the Flatulance Forum. Never mind. p.s. the Japanese word for fart is "onara."

I'm disappointed to see that this thread was moved to the fractals forum--it started out in the Poser Forum. I suspect the move was well-intentioned, but I deliberately posted it to Poser because among that group are the people who would take my comment for what it was--a joke. In this forum are people who could more easily be offended. As a courtesy, it would have been nice of the moderator to tell me that they would take this action, and giving me the option of deciding whether I wanted the post moved or deleted. Anyway, I understand how my post could be deemed "off-topic" but I still find the action irresponsible. (grumble)

tresamie ( ) posted Wed, 28 January 2004 at 9:16 PM

There are some new fractal programs out there, and they can be very interesting...especially when doing one of those NVIATWAS images. It amuses me when grown men play with dolls...sort of their own Build-A-Babe game toy. :P j/k

Fractals will always amaze me!

dialyn ( ) posted Wed, 28 January 2004 at 9:20 PM

Well, I started out as a Poser enthusiast and I try to stay one, but I have to admit the fractal gallery has more variety and creativity. It is interesting when the monthly challenge is held (where all forums can participate) that the fractals have been steady winners...certainly not only able to compete with other software but win votes from people who are not fractal artists themselves. It's easy to make fun. It's more difficult to learn something new.

pookah69 ( ) posted Wed, 28 January 2004 at 11:06 PM

Dialyn, I admit that the "fart" joke is going for the cheap shot. But sometimes that is exactly what's needed around here--judging by the size of this thread, I'd say my comment stimulated some interesting dialog. I'd also like to mention that what is far harder than learning something new is to stick with one thing until you've truly mastered it. I find that the temptation is to go from one dazzling piece of software to the next, all the while never truly creating anything of great worth. But I don't know...maybe that's just me.

PunkClown ( ) posted Thu, 29 January 2004 at 1:49 AM

pookah, I have moved this thread to the OT forum as that seems to be the most obvious place for it, as it was obviously just in jest. I must say, I couldn't see any evidence of the fractal forum regulars taking any offense here however...Perhaps they have a better sense of humour than you initially thought? BTW ~ I was not the one who initially moved your thread, but this is a good heads up that it would be a good practice for us to send a courtesy IM when threads are moved. :-)>

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 29 January 2004 at 7:56 AM

I'm not sure why cheap shots are needed, but if that's the mind set, then that tells me nothing about fractals and everything about the joksters. OT is exactly where this thread belongs.

pookah69 ( ) posted Thu, 29 January 2004 at 8:03 AM

hm...well, I guess you showed me, Dialyn. (Seems I've rubbed you the wrong way before. That's something I'll just need to live with.) Thanks for sharing your opinion.

"BTW ~ I was not the one who initially moved your thread, but this is a good heads up that it would be a good practice for us to send a courtesy IM when threads are moved." Actually what would be best would be a single post (with the thread subject line) that includes wording to the effect of: This thread moved to xxx forum because of xxx reason. Then include a link to the thread in the new forum. I (and I'm sure many others) don't always post in the threads I read so I don't always get ebots on every thread I track. it would be nice to be able to still find out what happened by looking in the original location.

A good portion of the fractals posted here are people just using the software and turning dials. But a small number are amazingly good and quite artistic. It's like anything else here. I don't care for the majority of poser images here. But I look because there are that small number that are just outstanding. It's like the old saying from Robert Silverberg. 98% of everything is crap. But that 2%. That 2% is what makes it all worthwhile.

Talent is God's gift to you. Using it is your gift to God.

Bobasaur, re:

You are quite right of course, and that has always been my practice, as the original poster does tend to check the replies to their own thread...I usually do this immediately after the thread is moved...no new url link is needed as all subsequent ebot references to that thread will direct anyone to the thread in it's new home!

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 29 January 2004 at 5:05 PM

True PunkClown, but the ebots only goes out to people who has POSTED in the thread. Others may be following it, and for all they know it's just suddenly vaporized. That's why a link would be very nice :o)

I see your point, however - if you mean that besides having to move a thread that has been posted in an inappropriate place to begin with, mods and admins should also post a new thread in the wrong forum that it was originally posted in, just to let people who have been following it know it's been moved? This seems a bit over the top to me ~ Surely it would be a much better option that people posting such threads would actually think about them before they post them in the first place, then post them in the appropriate place, and if not simply take responsibility for their own actions? :-)>

Bobasaur ( ) posted Thu, 29 January 2004 at 6:31 PM

PunkClown, Thanks for the comment. I don't believe I've ever regularly frequented a forum you've moderated. I understand that that's extra work. I wish there was simply a button, maybe the same button you use to move a thread, that would automatically create a "forwarding" post. This thread is an excellent example of what sometimes happens. Originally about one subject but then it drifted. The originator of the post could have had no idea that there would be discussion of Japanese characters as a result of their post. Therefore even if they'ed posted it originally in the Fractal's forum it would still be off topic. What gets weirder (I'm sure you're all too aware) is when the original post could fit under multiple topics ("How dow I make the texture fit better in this Poser animated movie rendered in Lightwave?" = texture forum, Photoshop forum, Poser forum, 2D/3D Animation forum, Lightwave forum, Director's Cut forum and when you're done the Virtual Tavern) I don't envy your jobs as mods etc. I also hope you understood the tone of my post as being '"sympathetic and wishing there was a better way" as opposed to being antagonistic. That's my intent. ;-)

I certainly did take it that way bobasaur, thanks very much for your comments. I too find it quite entertaining the way threads can digress into some very interesting discussions not originally intended in the initial posting, it makes for a wonderfully varied read (with some nice images to look at on the way) Take care.
