Subject: Poser under Lindows? - yes Lindows with a L

Anyone have poser working under Lindows? Does it work and if so is is quicker, slower or teh same? Just thinking about getting Lindows to play with

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 07 February 2004 at 1:16 AM

I'm not sure about Lindows, but Penguinisto managed to make Poser run under Win4Lin. He reported slower loading and faster render speeds (compared to Win2K), along with a limitation of 128MB of memory for the Windows shell.

Lindows is not legal anymore in Holland after the problems with Microsoft, exact 2 days ago they stop own distribution and waiting to do the same in USA so not big future for Lindows and Poser LOL..

In Germany it is still legal and you can buy it in several online software shops. Hope it stays that way.

The problem is when they stop with it there will not future or any updates, so waste of your money.

Dunno about Lindows... It's a great way to introduce someone to Linux if they're computer not-so-literate, but if you've any *ix experience, skip the pretty GUI-based critter and go for the real thing (evil grin). I've run Poser under RedHat (8.0, 9.0) with no problems, as well as SuSE 8.0, but Win4Lin has working kernel modules for those distros. They do have a custom kernel module you can compile into whatever Lindows is using if you can handle it. Cath - It is and it isn't legal, depending on which court does what... but all the sturm und drang is over the name "Lindows" itself, not the software. Incidentally, you can buy Lindows-based computers at walmart.com for roughly $300 US, or the same hardware with XP on it for $100 US more. /P

P. I know but I read yesterday about that they claim that Lindows was found before Windows and Microsoft stole the idea from them etc.. so dirty things around not only the name but also the certificates etc.. Microsoft try to kill them but it get not so simple in the USA as they expected.. Microsoft win in Holland as well.

I would like to repeat the original ?? of this post: Anyone used Poser in Lindows? I am interested in knowing because I have an award of $100. worth of Lindows merchandise on hold. I let them file my claim against Microsoft in the California Group anti-trust suit of a few months ago.

Penguinisto, you've run Poser under SuSe? Can you give more details or the link to them? I've tried it a couple of times with Wine, but no avail. If I could get it to work then the the last reason for me to stick to WinXP would be gone.

Sure - check out the link up top of this post... those are the guys selling Win4Lin (Workstation edition is what you're looking for.) Dunno if they do SuSE 9.0 yet, but it's worth asking.

mondoxjake: I certainly haven't and I doubt anyone else has. IMHO, Lindows is a joke....and a rip off. I don't usually defend Microsoft (lord knows they've done their share of stupid and shifty things), but in this case, I'm on the side of Windoz. Maybe the creep who runs Lindows will give you $100 in cash instead of his merchandise......seems like the least he could do for letting your name be used in a lawsuit against the richest man in the world! :) As for Microsoft stealing the name from them......now that's funny! Glad to hear that there is a workable alternative to Wine! I'm a Mandrake fan personally :)

LordNakagawa ( ) posted Mon, 09 February 2004 at 8:07 PM

Thanks for the feedback. I notice that Lindows no longer claims to run windows programs which was its original conception. It seems now ther are saying taht you have to get WINE, WIN4LIN, or soem emulator to run windows programs. Seems liek eth only thing LINDOWs has going for it is that its a friendlier interface. A columist once said tah th e"the monment that teh makers of Lindows sart pushing SUNOffice it means it wil not microsft offcie and that Lindows is dead. Guess what on their home page? SunOffice. I think I'll go with RedHat

sandoppe ( ) posted Mon, 09 February 2004 at 8:36 PM

If you want a friendly user interface LordNakagawa, there are a couple of good alternatives to consider. I believe you will still have to use the emulator's if you want to run windows stuff, but I have found the UI to be very easy and very (should I say it!) "windows like" :) All of these are good, legitimate and fully loaded operating systems that include a large variety of Linux compliant software: Linux Mandrake: http://www.mandrakesoft.com/ Suse Linux: http://www.suse.com/ Lycoris: http://www.lycoris.com I have never run RedHat, but am familiar with those above. In fact, I think you will find Lycoris very much like XP in terms of look and feel. The guy who created it once worked for Microsoft as I recall:) Also, there are lots of good alternative programs to those created for Windows. And you can't beat Linux for web use! :)

sandoppe - if you've run Mandrake, you'll have no problems with RH. Mandrake takes a lot of RH's core and incorporates it, so the filesystem layouts and behaviors will be nearly a perfect match. The only real difference is that Mandrake adds a lot of user-friendly config and management proggies on top of the native tools. /P

You could be right Penquinisto. I don't use Linux as my every day system, as too much of what I do requires the use of Windows based software. I do prefer the "friendly UI", being a "point and click" type and not much into "console's" and keyboard commands :) I've not upgraded yet to Mandrake version 9.2 (think that's the latest one). The machine that I have Linux installed on at this point, is still using version 8.2. Unfortunately that machine is an older PII with limited capability. Wine was still not very stable at that point. I also run Windows ME on that same machine :) One of these days.....when I have the time.....I would like to install it on my PIII, get a newer version and see how far it's come.

LOL - I just got done updating/upgrading my trusty old iPAQ H3635 PDA with the latest version of Familiar/Opie Linux... took about an hour, including a new bootloader. :) /P
