One option above that may be underrated is the Amorphium 3 sofware (www.electricimage.com) and if you buy the DVGarage version of Electric Image Universe (for 200 more) you'll have a heck of a package. The Electric Image Universe modeler and animator that come with the www.dvgarage.com kit are awesome. For making hair, there's no need to have the full high priced EIU package, the DV package is way more than enough. The neat thing about the EIU modeler is that its a nurbs modeler just like Rhino. In fact, both Rhino and EIU license the same code for the base code in the modeler. The main difference is the interface and I way prefer the EIU interface. If you want a free modeler that is good for non commercial use, its hard to beat the Metasequoia LE modeler. You can grab individual vertice points and move them with the mouse. I think EIU has a demo available. Here's a screen shot at www.annsartgallery.com/ei.html Top image is the animator and bottom image is the modeler. Lightening fast render engine, but you will probably want to buy the DV garage AND amorphium so that you can convert to .obj. The older EIU does not save in .obj, but amorphium reads the native save format and converts. Amorphium is a great organic modeler that will let you twist and shape your EIU mesh so they work well with each other.
