A lot depends on the end use of the image. Is it for screen use? Will it be printed? For screen use, the maximum screen use size usually used is 600 high x 800 wide at 72 dpi. If you were going to print the image, you would use 300 dpi. Photos with a larger resolution can always be sized down but you cannot always blow them up without them becoming "pixelated". :)
