I'm not usually one that goes in for 'challenges' and firearms fill me with disgust. So heaven knows why I'm doing this, whatever, here's my first progress report re the gun challenge.

Modeled in Amim8or; the barrel and associated bits started as a lathe, got extruded and then selectively 'face subdivided'. The wooden bits are subdivisions that started out as cubes. The main bit is just a sketch (X axis) extrusion ATM.

If anybody recognises what it's meant to be, and wonders why I'd model that... it is the most commonplace firearm on the planet, now and for most of the last 30 years, which might give pause for thought to firearm enthusiasts.

Quick Vue render, to make sure all the normals point the right way and that. Also, forgot to mention that the curved bit that sticks out of the bottom and holds the bullets is a subdivision, a swine to model, and proably has more facets than all my previous models put together.

Thanks for joining in on this modeling challenge. :o) I have to agree that subject matter does open itself up to debate, one way or another, but I'm glad you've chosen to focus on the modeling methods involved in creating a mesh like this. The detailing around the barrel is done very well... but the stock and grip seem a bit "thick". Just an observation. Looking forward to your next WIP. :o) Cheers! M

Thanks M. Yeah, I know the grip and stock are way too big in X - shows up even more in attached image - I'm not going to get detailed with them until I've done the main body of the thing.

ATM I'm rather unhappy to find that the bullet holder thing, that took ages to model, is also way too thick! I guess there's some kind of lesson to learn here. I started on the main bit last, cause it looked difficult, now I'm going to have to modify everything else to fit :) Hey, it's all good fun really!

Uh..Avtomat Kalashnikova 47? AKS 74? (nah, stock on that is plastic), MG-44? (nah..the wooden stock is a dead giveaway..;) Looks good so far, just need the safe/semi/full auto lever, some detailing, and you're dealing..I'll figure out what it is eventually..;) great model..

Hell no, this is the Wascomat-Kalashnikov '85 washer/dryer - the result a little known early-glasnost agreement between the US laundromat barons and the Soviet KGB, to devise a rapid-response underwear cleaning device. Pack your smalls into the magazine, pull the trigger for ten seconds, hey presto, all clean and dry! Albeit a bit powder burned, but kills all known bacteria! I tell you the research for this is driving me nuts, there's hundreds of images out there that all disagree! Anywho, got to forget it till next weekend, machine tools to commission, important executive type to pretend to be. I'll Be Back. Arnie (not)
