We have some big takes like this that are used for water treatment. Sodium Hydroxide (AKA Caustic Soda or lye) and sulphuric acid in the other. Properly mixed, the scrub out impurities in the water and then completely neutralize each other. In other words, it was the first thing to come to mind!
