Cute devil indeed ! Nanoshi : great anime-military look (the mecha pilot scant suit reminds me of the Mechwarrior role playing game...). By the way, what does Senbotsu mean ? As for my wetsuit texture, here it is on maya doll (the image needs a little more post work, I know, but this is an on going project : I want to use Metaforms on it). I gave the DL info to Marty so that he can redistribute it as he sees fit.

Thats so good Compiler, exellent work!

Nanoshi ( ) posted Sun, 22 February 2004 at 3:36 PM

Senbotsu means died/killed in battle, a bit like KIA. the idea behind the anime is that criminals, clinically insane and social misfits are no longer incarcerated for their crimes/conditions but are instead drafted into the millitary to serve as the fleets shock troops. Someone has to be the first into battle and as the first to engage the enemy usually has a slim chance of survival (think first to land on a beach, first to storm a castle, first to attack a bunker etc.) It might as well be societies trash that gets killed rather then brave outstanding citazens. Of course if these misfits survive the engagement, there is always next time... That's the background for the idea, the main characters are of course members of these shock units also known as Senbotsu Units as to coin the phrase 'they are already dead, they just don't know it yet!' Of course in true anime tradition a core of these misfits will become major heroes in the defence of their ship and of course will save the world... enjoy :)

Cool concept Nanoshi. It reminds me of Warhammer 40K's "penal battalions". I guess the death ratios are quite high in this unit ! BTW : do any of you use a male model for Anime Doll ? At Poser Pros, there are several morph targets available for the anime doll, one of them being the "male" morphs. I transfered it to the catsuit via The Tailor (but it doesn't work very well for the breast area). (FYI : Hair : sharkey, rifle and belt : propsguild, boots : Xena,Vest : Royloo, cammo material by RDNA : since it's a procedural texture, there is no problem for a seam at the hip/thigh junction). SenshiTaurus : this hair is for Posette, I just adapted it to MayaDoll. It was in the freestuff here (called "braids"), but it was a long time ago. I don't know if it is still here. Ultrasalon hair for Vicky would be a cool alternative, especially since there is an easypose version.

And for those of you who are interested in Evangelion, here is the link to the site where I had found the suits I showed above. These suits are for Posette. For MayaDoll, we'll have to wait for Marty's work...

Blimey Compiler, you whip up in an hour what I been trying to do for 2 days lol... We need a male Anime doll, girls are nice and all but it's just not the same without some guys around :) I like your soldier, looks good, what did you mean by proceadural texture for the cammo texture? I been drawing cammo and tiling it yadda yadda but I always get the crotch problem, I was going to leave it as real life cammos don't meet up at the seams anyway. Actually on the newer textures I have added bikini bottoms akin to the tops to hide it, which actually add to the anime look anyway but I am always willing to learn new things.

Riddokun ( ) posted Sun, 22 February 2004 at 6:47 PM

bought it and it is nice.. but for Poser 4 non propack users it is unusable in cartoon mode... because of a limitation, you cannot make "invisible" a "material" section in toon mode, it stil remains. You can turn a material section visible/transparent in rendered/textured mode and so with material roomand shaders in p5 but classic P4, forget it. many "anime doll" claimed rmp items suffer for same problem (xena out fit etc), they behave fine in any rendered modes but cartoon modes always keep the parts visible. only method is to use grouping tool every time, select a material room and revers its normals and such, and save plenty of copies of edited cr2... just insane. if anyone has a trick to hide/show parts/materials in toon mode... you still can turn on/off "actor" group parts, but they are not always the same as material ones, for example the legs of the catsuit are ovr buttocks, thighs and legs groups... okay i know he answer: buy p5 or don't do cellshading/anime art.. guess i got it !

Riddokun ( ) posted Sun, 22 February 2004 at 7:13 PM

btw I use a newbie trick to USE textured or transmapped clothes in a cellshaded/cartoon mode picture... but believe me it is dumb, time consumming and insane, and requires at least 3 or 4 sub renders just for each clothes/transmapped parts...

insomniaworks ( ) posted Sun, 22 February 2004 at 7:28 PM

Riddiokun, Thank you for your feedback! I am not using tune modes in my renders - I prefer to play with AnimeDoll in her 3d state. Its just a matter of preference. I created this product to work with p4 and higher. Although, I am very unfamiliar with toon rendering, I have plenty of testers who do and no one had informed me that they were having any problems with my products - except for sailor moon that had far too many traingles in the mesh making dots. I am not sure, as I said, how to respond to your usage problems with toon rendering, but I am sure others will put in their two cents worth shortly. I always strive to make my products as easy to use as possible. Maybe some more MAT poses could be made for your usage and offered as an update - I really don't understand the problem yet though. We will see. Also everyone who has poses and is submitting them to me. I had a deadline to get those into the freepackage of friday. Please post links to poses here for download and or the Free Stuff. marty

Riddokun ( ) posted Sun, 22 February 2004 at 8:10 PM

Hmm thanx for the offer but MAt won't solve my problem. it is not your fault, it is a limitation of Poser; in fact it is true, Poser cartoon mode is not used very often and i guess curious labs people that thrown it in did not even thought people would push it too far, it was just a curiosity. I often have problems with it (as i use it daily) such as some props or camera angles that makes "hidden" z lines to show above front items /characters. Cartoon mode IN poser4 does not trat lights, materials adn such in a logic and accurate way. The only "toon" mode that allow uses of textures, transparencies (and so your suit) yet keeping outlines and such is through P5 material room and shaders... In order to use transparency, transmapped items or textured clothes in P4 using this mode is in fact an insane challenge at least for a newbie like me. I dont know about poser gurus, but for someone without strong knowledges about poser (can find some anywa) or even poser cartoon mode (nearly no inner knowledge found so far), working in such condition is insane :) I know many people use anime characters such as anime doll in 3d rendered mode.. it disturbs me a bit because such characters are aimed obviously to belong to anime look/style and most attempts (not in poser but on video games or advertising or animation) i saw just make them look awfully fake. Peopel used to complain about the "plastic mannekin" look of posette and dork ? foer me an anime character used in 3d mode feels just the same. Matter of taste. Some people i see on rosity manage to overcome it but they have very awesome skills and echnics, and i dont :). Plus, without any texture, the base color of animedoll body/head looks very dull in 3d mode. For it to look decent (to me) you need lot of postwork (i know because my shading technic needs to combine toon mode and black lines WITH shaded elements gained from a 3d flat render). Better use a body texture for her and keep her base to white. Only animedoll texture available though is from apphoenix and is in rmp, no free one. Don't need photorealism or steffy ZZ kind of work for her though, a plain texture with some noise and details could do the trick I am aware that all cartoon mode is not in fact a clever choice for newbies and that don't make products "easy of use" no matter the care put in them, but it sounds so more logical. Why not keep using mayadol instead then ? I mean she is nice and behave well as textured/3d character... Yes i think most animedoll products now only bear in mind Poser 5 features and users. It is just a burden and a source of frustration to keep using poser 4 AND anime/manga style at same time (but i am masochistic). As such, don't expect to see any work using your catsuits from me for days because i made estimations and it would take huge amount of time and renders to an unskilled person like me to make it work. The other alternative could be to reverse normals when need to turn a material invisible. would be tricky anyway and still could be buggy in some poses/camera angles. will have a try. About your suit though, for "normal" 3d use, i have a question: trims have "volume", are sligthly bigger than suit's areas, and they are too visible when you want to make some kind of suits or configurations. Are there morphs/poses or dials to flatten them so they merge/mix with adjacent parts ?

Caly ( ) posted Sun, 22 February 2004 at 11:09 PM

Yep, Poser has frustrating limitations. I'm using plain Poser 4 on a Mac, and admit I could use some toon shaders, but I have to make do with what I have. I love this Anime Doll, and her Catsuit is so fantastic on her! :) This is a rough WIP. Hopefully after work on Monday I'll be able to continue working on the image and will post her in my gallery. As it is I've already decided to change her hair color and a few other things, but have run out of time. Need to go to bed, it's already late EST and I wake up at 6:30 am. :)

Nanoshi ( ) posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 3:19 AM

Riddokun, I have done several cartoon mode renders with poser 4, as you've seen in my gallery. I find hand colour the areas and in areas where there are two materail zones (like the sailor moon gloves. I render once in flesh and once in white, then place the white over the flesh and cut away the un-needed parts. Cartoon mode isn't something you can render away at for hours with out at least some post work. and as it's cell shading anyway there is nothing wrong with postwork, and sometimes is a must. It takes more time to get a good cartoon shade and I'm not expert at it in poser that's for sure, but it saves alot of time than drawing them from hand which is what I like about it :) Insomniaworks - Monday = work :( will render the boots insitue when I get home tonight...stay tuned.

Riddokun ( ) posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 6:22 AM

well i give you the point: it saves time especially if, like me, you cannot draw at all :) anyway, i do not know how to postwork and make a render look good; also i can see or make decent pictures in cartoon mode "out of the box" from poser engine usually. For sailor moon suit in fact i cheat, i use Cutey Honey mayadoll gloves (free if you Buy Mariah from mayax) because in poser 4 the trick insomnia used (a texture with drawn whie gloves) won't work unless you use a textured render. These gloves suits perfectly in fact, they just are yellow at first need to turn them white. catsuit question: No matter how i set down transparency falloff, highlight, reflection colors and strength, i still have some "transparency" effect on the catsuit if i use the "sexy" transmapped animal versions ! means all the skin shown below neck is a bit clearer and around toes i see the outlines of the suit, i speak in textured mode of course. With black highlight and reflection color, 0% hightlight and reflection strength and 0% transparency falloff, is it normal to SEE the suit anyway, even ligthly ? PS: nanoshi: how did you manage to make harkonnen's swat v2 suit on animedoll ? i always look for making v2 cloths fit her :(

Nanoshi ( ) posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 6:45 AM

If I told you that Riddukun I'd have to shoot you :) nah j/k, believe it or not I conformed it to animedoll out the box cartoon rendered it and then got rid of the crap lines and touched up the discrepancies in photoshop (postwork). however there is a product by davidC that lets you conform any (in theory) item of clothing from one model to another, but it is $39 to buy so have avoided it so far. Also there is a program called the Tailor but again I have avoided it so far due to limited budget. But if you have photoshop it is easy to do postwork using layers. bring your render into photoshop and first thing you do is copy the layer so you have 2 of the same image (always keep the background one untouched in case you go wrong) then make a new blank layer above the previous layers and paint on any colours or paint over any black lines ya need to remove etc. (don't worry about going over the existing areas but do try to keep inside the boundaries) finally make a new layer above the rest and draw in any new black lines you need, I find holding shift down whilst using the brush makes a rubberband so drawing lines even curves is doable if you take your time. once black lines are in place use the eraser tool on the colour layer to remove excess colour that overlapped. save your new image as whatever format you like and keep the .psd with it's layers for reference and change later. remember the beauty of using layers is you can build up several colours on different layers, and if you make an error discard the layer and try again, always leaving the original untouched below. Like I said takes a bit of extra time, and I'm no expert by any means but that's more or less what I do in the postwork phase. Also whilst it's nice you managed to get some gloves for the sailor suit don't worry about material zones so much in cartoon mode, like I said render the model in the colour needed for the various parts then bring them into photoshop in different layers and cut them away leaving the various colours required. Hope that helps.

hmm tanx nanoshi, but i do not have photoshop '(limited budget too), and yes tailor and MarkDc cloth conformer are pricy too, especialy given the fact that you also need the other markDC product (group editor) if you want to make cloth conversiosn trickier than v2 to v3 (means by example v2 to mayadoll) and it is same range of price... The price of poser artist for such feature, no matter it is vital, wel i have to give up, plus downloading the 18mb of the rmp product would cost me 3 more $ in phone bill :) for the black line tutorial thanx nanoshi but the newbie i am found a dirty trick to take care of black lines already and so far i use it without having to "draw" lines at hand or with beziers (because i sux at paint softwares). Don't know if your method gives out the best results but so far my own technic is enough for what i do :) so you won't give hints on how to fit V2/foreign clothes on anime/mayadoll then ?, yet you manage to do this without sailor or MarkDC cloth conformer ? give you kudo on this then :( little outof the box nopostwork cartoon mode render using the catsuit. In oder for you to realise i just did not paint fabric areas the same color as the doll body, i had to remove the breasts cover too, and put the maya free tanktop instead. Would the belly button had been visible under cartoon render and not covered by the catsuit belt, you could have realised i did not cheated this way (means painting parts of he catsuit with same color of bosy), but this in fact (with brest shape) shows my point :) it is crap (no postwork, as you said cartoon mode dont handle well in this mode especially with the catsuit because of all the trims areas making double edges :() but it was an experiment hopefully i have another newbie dirty trick to use transmapped materials (it is just insane, but possible :)

Nanoshi ( ) posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 8:26 AM

Riddokun, I was only joking about getting the clothes to fit, I didn't use any tricks or anything I just used the standard conform from within poser and then painted out the 'crap' in photoshop. Btw Paintshop pro I believe is alot cheaper than Photoshop and does just as good job and i think it has a 30 day trial (which never used to run out). it uses layers etc. there are quite alot of ways to draw black lines on your figure. I just choose to do it by hand as I am used to drawing anime that way although it's harder and easier in a paintpackage at the same time if that makes sense? harder to get the line shape you want but easier to remove if you go wrong :) but with everything it's trial and error and you will get better, I have just started using poser to draw figures so am a relative newbie too regards that kind of thing, but what I lack in poser skill I make up for in postwork. But what i've said before at the end of the day you are producing a piece of artwork if you had to redraw a arm or some hair to get the look it doesn't matter as it's the finished picture that matters. Your render looks ok, what I would suggest though, is use a white background and turn your main light up as bright as possible this will give a better anime shadow and the white background makes the colours brighter, grey tends to make the colours look dirty. what I would do with that image next is bring it into my paint package and brighten the image to get better cartoon colours and tidy up any lines I didn't want. My only real problem with the render is your lighting angle you lose the 'anime' nose it's kind of a trade mark of anime drawing. hehehe hark at me I made 3 pictures and am talking like an expert :/

compiler ( ) posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 1:06 PM

Nanoshi : Procedural textures are effects calculated and projected on the object at the time of render, instead of being mapped. You can use them on objects that have no maps, they apply on a material by material basis. On my render I used a cammo procedural texture (basically, you make up your shader to project some dots on the object, you set the form, colors, etc...). I also used a procedural texture on the "fire and smoke" background. This is a non retouched Poser5 render (except for the soldier's shadow and my name...). Procedural textures are available in poser5 (and all other 3D applications, including Vue and Bryce...), but not in poser4. Riddokun : I've made a new obj for the catsuit, without the trims. It works all right. You only need one magnet to do this. For converting clothes from a character to another (e.g. V2 to Maya Doll), Clothes converter and Quick conform are really handy tools, and they speed the process up dramatically. But if you are on a budget, you can have the same results with 3 hours of work on magnets and a good text editor. To fit the clothes to the male anime doll : Long and good version : take the catsuit into a 3D app, arrange the polygons so that they fit the male AD form, then import in poser and edit the catsuit cr2 to make them conforming. Quick and dirty version (for one shots images such as the one above) : for the catsuit, change its form using magnets or (much quicker) the Tailor. Conform as usual. For the boots and kevlar vest, don't change anything. Do not conform the figures, just parent them to male AD's hip. Pose male AD. Pose the clothes so that their position matches the male AD's position (remember : only important thing is what can be seen in the image, not what's behind the character). Et voila ! Marty : "I have my head burried in these boots for the last few days". LOL !.

compiler ( ) posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 1:13 PM

By the way, Marty : these boots are nice ! They look like they're made for walking ! Riddokun : for your transparency problem, did you check that both the transparency and transparency fall off are at 100% and that the ambient color is absolute black ?

If you want to do it for yourself : import the catsuit's obj open the grouping tool click "new group" and name it "trims" click "add material" and select a trim material repeat above step until all the trims have been selected and added to the "trims" group select the catsuit obj create a magnet place the magnet base roughly at the middle of the abdomen set the magnet zone to 10000% scale in the properties palette of the magnet zone, click on the "group" option, and then select the "trims" group select the magnet set the magnet scale to 1% Et voila : you have set the trims inside the catsuit (and did not lose a morph in the process) now export this new obj (e.g. catsuitnotrim.obj)in the Geometries folder, under a subfolder of your choice Open the insomniaworks' catsuit cr2 in a text editor and edit both lines pointing to the original catsuit.obj so that they point to the obj you just created.
