Volumetrics can sometimes just plain suck to do. Sometimes, with a couple clicks it's great, and other times I'll struggle forever... Basically, when I do them inside of Bryce, I go the classic way; use a elongated primitive with a volume light mat applied to it, and a spotlight inside. BUT, sometimes I find it easiest to just activate the option on the spotlight; "Visable Object - Volume", and then start bringing down the intensity, until it works/looks right. It's pretty much different for every scene. Here's a link to a forum thread where I put up a link to download a volumetric cone scene I made, maybe it will help? It uses a spotlight inside a cylinder with a volume mat on it. AgentSmith

try this off the top of my head turn one of your spots into a volume visible... infinite then go to ranged (click it) and set it for just a guessing at your scale about 100 or 200... if it shows up in your render and the scale is good then play with the lights edge softness... keeping in mind, this will also shorten (view aperant) your light, so you might have to increase the range some... i think though, in this case, i would use a surface visible spot light instead of a volume one... i only say that because if your not trying to take advantage of the 'volume' effect (that is to say, to break the volume and cast shadows within the light) then a surface visible might be best and easier to render... again just off the top of my head... good luck!

mmm.. the light kinda falls off there... shrug i liked the how it ignited the deck of the ship on your first image. also the two light dont seem consistent, that is to say, the closest 'sub' has a wide-short stream and the furthest 'sub' has a short-thin stream... either way, looks good. glad it worked out.
I agree with all of what you have said,I prefer the way the lights hit the deck in the first image. The difference in the shape of the lights is more to do with the attitude of the vehicle as both sets of lights are the same type, settings and position on the vehicle. I will be tweaking the image as time permits, I want the water to have a little "dirtier" colour as well. Cheers GG.
