In a nutshell, Poser 5 is an entry level 3d character rendering and animation program. It's not a 3d modeling application in the general definition of the term though.
Poser allows artists to incorporate 3d characters into 2d/3d digital work using an extensive library of relatively inexpensive third party 3d figures and accessories without the need to learn how to model, texture and rig (i.e. prepare for animation) 3d meshes themselves.
Along with the Curious Labs website, you might want to check out Daz3D to see some of what's available for Poser in terms of third party content.
Along with Renderosity, there are several online communities dedicated to providing third party content (free and retail) as well.
