Cedarwolf, the naval references in Star Trek was actually a deliberate choise Gene Roddenberry made back in the 1960's when he made up the original Star Trek. He wanted it to be new, yet familiar, and since it was a star SHIP, and Star FLEET, he decided to keep as many naval references as possible :o) Including the various colours and ranks :o)
