If you want booleans try truespace - last I heard version 3 was still free. It is neither as intuitive nor quite as easy to use as wings but it is just as good in it's own right once you get used to it's more difficult interface. Also gmax (descreet), but since microsoft's now infamous worm patch, some of the maxscripts which made it useful to me haven't worked right even with microsoft's so called temporary correction to the patch. marbleclay and metasequoia also have their fans. I think the links to these programs are on the header of the modeling forum except for gmax which a google of keyword gmax should locate.
