One possibility comes to mind - could you use a terrain? Set the brush to a reasonable height and just fill in, but leave the corners rounded? (You'd also be able to create some detailing if your hand is steady enough - mine wouldn't be..) Then clip off the "ground level" and flip 90 degrees in the x or z axis. Just thinkang aloud here...
