Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Well.... How much free space do you have on your drives, and what exactly are you trying to do? When you set the swapfile for a certain size, then that part of the hard drive is marked as 'hands off' to everything except the OS, who decides what gets to use it. If I'm reading this right, what you've done is set your swapfile for 1 gig, period. Try bumping the max up to 2000 and see if that helps; a good rule of thumb for your swap file is to make the maximum value triple what your phyical memory is. If you are trying to render to disk, then the issue is the settings you are using (there's something else Poser related involved, but damned if I can remember what it is at the moment).

If you've followed the advice in the Curious Labs FAQ, that usually does it. You might want to consider defragmenting your system files; these are locked by Windows and usually untouched by the standard defrag. Follow the link for a utility which will do it at boot time.If I did the math right, you have 6 gig free on a 20 gig HD...a little better than 25% free space total. You are running out of room. Another thing is, having the swap file on two or more HD will give better performance (although really not that great). But having Windows swap files on separate partitions on the same HD (as you have done)is not a good idea at all. (Even Microsoft warns against doing so,as it can cause a loss of performance). You best bet is to install a second HD (they are very cheap)and put the swap file on which ever HD is the fastest. Gotta get off line...lighting storm... SWAMP
My P4PP used to get really mean if I had less than 15GB space left on my HD, no matter what my swap file settings were.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
SWAMP, the free space that I have is exactly: primmary partition - 1,6 Gb. of 5 (32% free), secondary partition - 4,3 Gb. of 15 (30% free). The matter because I have OS in a partition and the program files in other one is because since 1995 my PC history is a long long succession of Windows crashes; if my primary partition dies, always I can reinstall again the OS, but my Poser remains intact ... if I need to reinstall my Poser with ALL my characters, props, etc., I would turn CRAZY!!. I am considering to update RAM to 1 Gb., but also to buy a new HD, and to have New as Disk One (at least 80 Gb.) for OS and Program Files and Actual as Disk Two (20 Gb.) exclusively for Poser. Dale B., the trick about upload VM to 2000 failed, I try other thing... DAMN DAMN DAMN (grunt)

I tell to all you who have given me help posts that finally my render capability got back as ever. It has been a combined solution of updating the virtual memory of Posers partition to 3000 and doing a massive clean of files in both partitions (OS and Poser) to leaving a free space of 40% in each one. The first time that the render window appears normally, almost I cry... ;) When I finished the all-damen-render that begun the trouble, Ill dedicated to all you and post here a link THANKS TO ALL!!! ;)

I've been following this thread because I've ALWAYS had trouble with this. I've tweaked and tweaked and tweaked and never had any luck getting Poser to co-operate with me. I certainly didn't know about putting a swap file on partitions on the same drive would cause a problem! I'm off to move some partitions and tweak some more. At least I have hope that I can fix this.... fingers crossed bonni

Here now the all-in-the-hells-message. I need help, guys. I have a PC with AMD Athlon 1800 Mhz processor, 768 Mb RAM, 64 Mb graphic card, W2000 and Poser Pro Pack. My hard disk is a 20 Gb one, with primmary partition of 5 Gb with operating system and secondary partition of 15 Gb with Program Files (and Poser). A few months ago begun to appear the infernal message. With the CURIOUS LABS help web, I changed the settings of virtual memory to: primmary minimun 1000 - maximun 1000, secondary minimun 10 - maximun 500, and the trouble dissapear... until today (grunt). I have defragmented both partitions: nothing; I have updated maximun from secondary partition to 600, to 800 and to 1000: nothing; I have reduced the hires maps of V3 to half: nothing. Im losing mi patience. Can anybody help me???
