@Slakker - Definitely go where your wallet takes you. Just for myself, if I were just getting into photography I would much rather spend $300 on a film camera with lens than spend $1000. Especially if I wasn't sure if it was something I was going to stick with. Just remember, no matter what people tell you, the camera does not make the photographer. I've seen great photos from a photographer using a $7 35mm disposable camera and pure crap from guys using an $8000 D-SLR. @Tom - I don't think I follow the "wide angle (Nikon) or tele-lenses (Canon)" thought.
