"if figure 1 isn't V3 then the INJ morphs don't work." This is common assumption, but it's not completely correct, unfortunately. The figure to be injected has* to be the first figure IN THE SCENE. That means it will typically be Figure 1, but not all figure 1's are the first figure loaded. Do New scene, then load the figure to be injected before loading anything else. A freshly loaded Poser is usable without New only if you have set your own preferences to load to an empty scene - if you delete the default guy to clear the scene, the scene is not truly empty to Poser. (Note this means that 2 injection figures can't be in the same scene, unless one is saved to the library fully injected previously - but see note below). * There is a way around this, Maveris' invention which I termed FII (Figure Independent Injection), but it has it's own set of downsides too.
