And remember: render the animation with display settings for quick tests, and try not to use full render settings until you're sure you're done. In cases like this, where you want to test the transparency or motion blur settings, try to do it on a lower resolution, like half of what your final resolution will be. If you just find yourself annoyed that you can't see the transparency in the test renders, turn the transparency off until you're ready for the final render. I do this a lot when I'm trying to animate transmapped hair.
