Would it be possible to track the number of posts per hour over the last 24, and then per day over the last month? Then all you'd need would be the time of last log-on (which you must be using for the new posts flag anyway) and a quick tot-up of whole hours and whole days, to give an "at least x new posts" for each forum. Would that be enough to be useful without clogging the server?
