The best way to take money from a PayPal account is to transfer it electronically to your bank account. (They charge a fee to cut you a check, and once they mail it to you, you'd need a bank account to cash it, anyway.) Maybe he's got a local friend, who has a PayPal account, or who'd be willing to cash checks for him?
