having had some professional experience in KM, community-building, and OD, i would suggest that a "free space" is the best way to go - to satisfy the apparent need for a "social forum." rules? none, other than: 1) no admin/punitive action against any member for any comments made in the forum (except for those considered criminal as per the US Criminal Code and the laws of the state of tennessee - i.e. threats to do harm to property or person; or conspiracy to commit criminal acts); 2) no complaints entertained from members to admins for comments made in the forum; 3) no complaints entertained regarding administrative action to "lock" such threads in the forum that violate #1; and 3) EXTREME restraint from admins from intervention - other than participation. communities will tend to institute self-regulation after a period of "chaos." the chaos may be disconcerting; but in the end, it is the most effective governance mechanism.... just a thought....

Some administrators must be paranormals or consulted the crystal ball, so they've shut down the OT Forum just before the decapitation movie was released! Imagine the discussion at the forum!......

I wonder what would have happened if the mods let the OT Forum remain and had not interfered in any way in the "discussions"?

"'Discussions'" would have gotten a little more heated, until someone made a joke or somehow derailed the thread. Then everyone would have laughed and the thread would have died. That's what I've seen happen many times in my tenure here. P.S. I'd like to use the nifty new edit feature to add that I also thought pushinfaders was doing a good job at moderating. If anything, he was a bit too nice.

If a discussion is civil or barbarian doesn't matter, what is important is the subject of the discussion. For example you can't discuss if some book was written by ....

I don't see how you can have a Politically Correct Forum where no one gets offended unless A) It's regulated heavily 24/7/365 and/or B) the topics are tightly regulated.

Of course, the Admins for Renderosity have the right to set up or dismantle any part or all of the website however they see fit.

From my own experience, whenever you have those who crave high levels of attention by either being obnoxious and repulsive or who appear high minded and morally superior, just ignoring them renders them powerless after awhile, and then off they go in search of new prey.

Damn shame the OT forum had to be shut down.

Once again, I miss all the excitement!! Hrmph...
