Trimming out what you are not using is always a good idea. Just archive it elsewhere. The 256 limit is actually not that horrible (I try to keep my folders to < 100). Can you imagine scrolling through 3000 items just to get to the one hair positioning MAT (nobody would do that to get to the 20th shade of nail polish, would they?) It's like clearing out the sock drawer... you can only put it off for so long when the mismatched or needs mending or wrong colors bug you to the point of sorting them out and keeping what you can use.
