Ego-stroking is, in my opinion, a wrong reason. I'm not much for moral equivocation, I suppose. But hey - free stuff is free stuff, and download it to your heart's content, but if someone is so anal about counting every download and applying it to their ego-stroking ("oh yeah, well you suck because unlike you, my stuff has n downloads!") then it certainly isn't 'right', is it?

An addition: think also of those who have thrown hissy fits in here, pointing to their d/load counts and claiming that the community would come apart without them
