Windows creates the GID file, which is a sort of dictionary, when you use a HLP file. When you ask for a keyword index, and Windows spends several minutes "writing on the pages of a book", it is making the GID file. So the only reason to keep the GID file is to avoid watching that little pen writing on the book! If you never use the keyword feature, it won't matter at all.
