For an explosion I've had some success getting an explosion effect by creating a lumpy, slightly irregular terrain. Make it two sided Angle it towards the camera a little so its base isn't flat to the floor. Clip it so its edges arn't straight. Use the larva texture and then tweak the texture to get something that is brighter. Make it very slightly transparant and put some point lights inside it that are red. Hope this helps.
