I'm willing to bet your pen has no battery if it has a "cord." If it does not have a cord, then it has a battery. There has to be some way for the pen to help generate its signal.

Also, from my own experience, the best thing is to avoid ZoneAlarm. I uninstalled ZoneAlarm once due the stupidity in the way it worked (it thought my ISP's email server was an evil invader!). ZoneAlarm threw a hissy-fit and cut off my Internet access entirely. I had to use Norton Utilities to clean up my registry and give me back the internet.
