Just now there is a really great discussion going on in the E-groups Carrara forum started by Antoine Clappier (Carrara's designer)about photon mapping and higher level realism in rendered images. It's really worth a read. It has a link (given below) to an informative page at Standford about photon mapping. The feeling I got is that Carrara 2.0 may well include an new engine to generate photo-realistic images utilising photon mapping algorithms to render radiosity and caustics.
