Subject: Almost but not quite

I don't claim to be a great photographer but usually I can get my subject in focus and centered in the frame. Not today, however, because I ALMOST got some great pictures. But they were either cut off, out of focus or the subject refused to cooperate. The horse is my arab stallion, the white marking on his neck are a freexe brand - a permenant method of ID that can't be missed - unliked microchips or lip tattoos. The "A" stands for Arabian and the rest of it is his birth year and registration number in coded symbols.

If I'd only aimed lower... This would have been a fantastic picture.

If this one had been in focus, it would have been a classic Arab stallion shot (this shot is in about half the stallion ads I've seen)

Blacki (what else do you call a horse with the registered name of WRR BlackGold?) is well trained and will obey commands like "whoa" and "stand" even when he is loose in the pasture. But that doesn't mean he has to like it. ;)

This pix isn't a bad head shot but it would have been perfect if he had had his ears forward.

Well...this is not exactly like Photographing an Insect in a Jar....difficult when they are on the move....a fine Steed for sure...and...Your persistence will soon pay off...again....what a fine Horse...and I still feel the first pic is a beaut :]

"I can get my subject in focus and centered in the frame" Aah, but the challenge is not to do that. It makes it more interesting when your subject isn't always in the center of your picture. I'm not telling you never to put your subject in the middle. Because it may be the right thing. But striving to get it in the middle 100/100 is not right... I hope I made some sense :)

Centering and focus depends on what I am trying to accomplish with the pictures. When I'm trying to get good pictures to show to mare owners who may breed to my stallion I want them centered and in focus. If I am trying for something more artisitic, centering and focus might not be the intent or even a good thing. In this case, I was trying for the former rather than the latter. And failing. :)

That top image.... is outstanding.... yes do agree a little bit more on the bottom would have made it perfect! A beautiful companion and friend you have there....

Daio - Yea, I think we've all been there. Those days when it seems like you couldn't nail your shot if your life depended on it. I usually get pissed off at myself, then a bit depressed that I let some moment(s) get away and then I go back and figure out what I did wrong so I don't do it again (hopefully). -=>Donald
