Sweet. While modularity is a good thing (why reinvent the wheel when there are already libraries that can do it for you), it looks like there must be something wrong with QT itself to make it that slow. Thanks for the tip! Rendering Quicktime movies is still working here (P5 on OS X), so just living without image formats I never use anyway is a small price to pay :)
