Stylistic renders are how I like to phrase it personally. I'm finding a LOT of demand for it professionally speaking. Of course, photorealistic renders do have their place where money can be made as well... architecture visualization for instance (but that really has nothing to do with characters or Poser). Games are becoming more realistic visually, but most of the top sellers are still very stylized, and it's not photoreal yet, and of course hollywood special FX. But my point remains, the opportunities available for using these "toon" characters is really quite abundant and profitable for artists looking to make a living in 3d.
